Volume XVI, Issue 11 - January 23, 2018

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed their time off, and your 2018 is off to a great start. Our PTA has planned just as many great programs and events as the first half of the year. We are excited to get started and share what you can expect.

Before Winter break, the PTA awarded staff educational grants to select teachers that will be used for items such as in classroom field trips, tools for the classroom, and educational conferences. All grants fund programs that offer creative and innovative approaches to the delivery of curriculum. In addition, the PTA will be working on our Track Installation Project. A committee has been formed and will be meeting over the next couple months to determine the best options to complete this project. Please send any suggestions or input regarding the track to president@chepta.net.

Our January PTA Meeting will be on Thursday, January 25th. The theme is Cultural Night & World of Art and is hosted by Kindergarten and Second grade. We will be highlighting the artwork of the Reflections winners and participants.   We will also be hosting our annual Cultural Night after the meeting. Come join the fun and experience dance, crafts and food from various countries.

We are in the middle of our Digital Safety week led by our librarian Mrs. Teal. Teachers will be discussing what it means to have good digital citizenship. To help celebrate this week, students are encouraged to participate in each theme days. Go to CHEPTA.net to learn more.

We are excited about Mrs. Taylor’s Book Discussion on “The Future of Happiness” with the author Amy Blankson who is a CHE parent and neighbor. The book study will be on Thursday, February 8th at 5:30. Please RSVP at http://tinyurl.com/CHEBookHappiness. Childcare will be provided.

If you have a student who loves science and performing experiments, you won’t want to miss our upcoming Family Science Night. Mark your calendar now for the evening of February 22nd here at the Castle.

Finally, we are recruiting for the open PTA positions to serve in the 2018-19 school year. Please consider serving on the PTA Board or committee and how you could share your talents with us. We will post those opportunities in an upcoming newsletter and on our website.

I am looking forward in sharing all the fun with you and your families. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Truly,

Nina Samuel
CHE PTA President (2017-19)

Eating delicious goodies is one of the best parts of the Winter Break. Unfortunately, too many of those sweets and we find ourselves carrying extra weight as we enter January. In your search for ways to shed the unwanted pounds, I want to encourage you in a way you may not have heard before.

Stay away from foods and drinks that say “diet” or “no calorie.” While initially weight loss can happen, over time the pounds return. If something is advertised as having reduced or no calories that means something of the nutritional value has been altered and can send the body into a tail-spin as it tries to figure out what needs to be done.

Studies have shown that when we consume sweets the body goes looking for the sugar to digest. But when it doesn’t find the carbs to breakdown, the brain may receive signals asking for more food or drink. This mismatch of sweet and calorie intake causes a breakdown in triggering the body’s metabolism to kick in. If the body doesn’t know to digest what’s in the stomach the result could be weight gain rather than weight loss. In the long run, it is better to monitor the amount you eat than to consume a manufactured -change to a food or drink.

When it’s all said and done, the best approach to losing weight in 2018 is to increase the amount of vegetables and fruits you eat every day. And, of course, exercising is a key. Walk as much as you can even if it means walking in place as you watch a TV show or climbing the stairs during the commercials. These things go a long way toward a healthier you.

THE FUN STUFF a.k.a. "Why We're All Here"

Mrs. Taylor and Mr. Johnson would like to nominate Mrs. Lori Moorehead as Castle Hills January Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Moorehead has been a teacher at Castle Hills since the doors opened in 2002. She is an all-around top notch teacher who consistently puts her students first. Each student knows Mrs. Moorehead cares about them and what she expects. She holds high expectations for her students to aspire to. She expects students to work hard to meet her high hopes both academically and socially. Her students do just that. Mrs. Moorehead teaches her students to do an excellent job self-monitoring their behavior and managing their own learning. This allows her special one-on-one time assessing and supporting student needs. This is also a direct result of the procedures and routines that she establishes for them at the beginning of the year. Students know where and how to access learning centers and resources and can do so independently. Thanks Mrs. Moorehead!

Who is your hero and why?

My hero is Jesus Christ because through Him I have peace with God and eternal life! I do have people that I admire such as my parents, especially my mother, and my husband of thirty years.  My mother and husband are both Christians and have both led unselfish lives of service to others, which is endearing to me.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

My husband and I moved to Texas thirty years ago from Arkansas and we are very happy here.

What is your favorite family vacation?

My favorite family vacation was to Breckinridge, Colorado in the summer with my husband and two sons.  Both of our sons were in college and it was our last family vacation before our oldest son graduated.  It was a memorable time for all of us to do the things that we love and to reconnect as a family unit!

What would you change about yourself if you could?

As a child, I wanted to be just like my mother.  As an adult, I am slowing changing into her, not sure if that is a good or bad thing for me.  If I were half the confident, strong woman that she is, I would change that about myself.  I periodically change my hairstyle; however, I am who God made me to be.

What really makes you sad?

What really makes me sad is when someone is knowingly dishonest with me as well as all of the hate that is going on in the world.

What motivates you?

I am so motivated and enjoy working with a team of teachers that work well together and don’t mind sharing resources, collaborating, and that value one another. Hard-working, dedicated learners motivate me as well!

What is your favorite thing about your career?

My favorite thing about my career is making a difference in the lives of the children that I have the pleasure to teach.  I love my little dragons!

What is your proudest accomplishment?

We are all works in progress; however, my husband and I are the proud parents of two adult sons.  It has been such a pleasure to watch them set and meet personal goals, mature, and become such productive citizens in our society.

What is your favorite book?

While preparing to go on a family trip, my eldest son suggested and purchased my first eBook, The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, on my Kindle.

What makes you laugh the most?

Our “smiling” Yorkie of 11 years, OTIS, he definitely keeps things interesting!

The Cooper Agency, a Farmers Insurance Agency, is awarding the Teacher of the Month with a $100 stipend to use for classroom supplies and favorite things!

Press Release from Texas School Counselor Association

In 2005, Texas School Counselor Association began a program called CREST to recognize schools with outstanding counseling programs. This year, 70 schools will be recognized for excellence in school counseling. CREST stands for C ounselors R einforcing E xcellence for S tudents in T exas. Schools receiving CREST awards have demonstrated a commitment using the school guidance and counseling program to improve the lives and achievement of students in academic, career, and personal social domains. The Texas School Counseling Association is proud to announce Castle Hills Elementary Counselor, Carol Rains is one of the CREST winners for the 2017-2018 school year

CREST is a continuous improvement document that gives a school counseling program an opportunity to demonstrate effective communication and a commitment to obtaining results. CREST helps counselors to evaluate their counseling programs, promote their programs to the stakeholders in their districts, demonstrate the effectiveness of their guidance and counseling programs through empirical means, and to implement the Texas and National models for school counseling programs.

CREST looks at the counseling program in seven areas: Principal’s Support, School Counseling Advisory Council, School Climate and Safety, Student Results, Major Achievements, Community Partnerships and Resources, and Parent Collaboration. The guidance support team prepares a document that highlights these areas and communicates just what the counseling program is doing to help students succeed. These documents are sent to reviewers throughout the state of Texas to be judged according to pre-set standards of excellence.

Congratulations to Carol Rains at Castle Hills Elementary for being one of a group of only 70 schools from across the state to win the CREST Award for Counseling Excellence for 2017.

My name is Alexandra Barko and this is my sixth year at this school, which means I am in fifth grade. My teacher’s name is Mrs. Etherly and I have been in Student Council two years. My favorite thing about fifth grade is how we are learning so many different things every day, and that the teachers push you so that you are ready for the STAAR test. Today I am going to be telling you some things about Student Council.

What is Student Council?
Student Council is a club that you can participate in to help the school, community and make lots of new friends. Student Council leads many activities like picking up trash, food drives, Christmas angels, red ribbon week and many other things. Some of the drives we do are for people who can’t afford things or they are in need. The teachers who lead Student Council are Mrs. Buell and Mrs. Pierce. They plan out all the activities that we do.

How do you get in?
If you want to get in Student Council next year you can go to Mrs. Buell at the beginning of school year or your teacher will hand out the application. One of the questions is “why do you want to be a part of Student Council”. After you turn it in, a few days later on the announcements they will announce everyone’s name who got in.

How you can help if you are not in Student Council?
If you are not in Student Council you can still help out your school and your community. Here are some ways to help out, you can pick up trash that is on the ground, you can turn off the lights if you are not in that room to not waste electricity or you can donate things to people in need. These ways are sure to help out your neighborhood.

Student Council is a hard working group where everyone in the club contributes to the project we are doing to help our neighborhood. It’s where you can help out, but at the same time you can make new friends. If you did not get into Student Council this year then I encourage you to try again next year because maybe you could be changing and helping our neighborhood out big time.
