Volume XVI, Issue 15 - March 20, 2018

I hope everyone enjoyed Spring break and has adjusted to the time change. Those first few days were tough for us, but we are certainly enjoying this Spring weather. We have less than 3 months until summer vacation…let the countdown begin!

Congratulations to all our Kingdom Tales authors. And thank you parents for encouraging your students to participate in this program. Don’t forget that each published author will have a $3 credit to use at our Book Fair which is this week. I am so excited about the Book Fair and hope you take some time to browse and buy a few books. We will have evening hours on Thursday, and each purchase helps Mrs. Teal buy more books for the library.

The next PTA General meeting will be on Thursday, March 22nd at 6:30 pm. The 3rd grade is hosting and will be participating in a Book Character parade. Come support our 3rd graders as they share their favorite book dressed as their favorite book character.   Looking forward to see you there and at the Book Fair right after!

Do you know any parents with an incoming Kindergartner or new student for the 2018-19 school year? Please remind them that they need to register their student online at enroll.lisd.net. Kindergarten registration will be on Thursday, April 5th and Friday, April 6th at 8:30 – 11:30 am and 1:00 – 2:00 pm at the school. The PTA will be giving school tours and will set up booths about our programs and spirit wear will be available.

Our Spring Family Event is coming up. Come join us for an evening of Bingo on Friday, April 23rd at 6:00 pm. This is a free event for the whole family. We will have a DJ, activities and food! Can’t wait to kick back and have some fun with everyone.

With the year winding down, I hope you continue to participate in each program that our PTA volunteers are enthusiastically planning. We have a calendar full of events. Make sure to check our website regularly for updates (chepta.net).

Hope your March Madness brackets are doing as good as mine! Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Truly,
Nina Samuel
CHE PTA President 2017-2019

Did you know there is a week dedicated to salt awareness? I didn’t. According to the American Heart Association the World Salt Awareness week is March 19-23.

So before you reach for a salty snack – my favorite kind of snack- there’s a few things we should remember. Water moves in and out of the blood vessels as it balances our bodily fluids. When there’s too much salt in the blood, more than the normal amount of water crosses the membranes and stays inside the vessels. As a result there is an increase amount of pressure on the walls resulting in a rise in blood pressure.

If we keep doing this the walls of capillaries, arteries and veins lose their integrity. And this weakness can lead to build up of plaque that further increases our blood pressure as the blood struggles to pass by the plaque deposits.

The key to remember – if you want a salty snack – drink extra water in proportion to the salt intake. Remember, a recommended daily portion of sodium is 1,500 – 2,300 mg and requires 6-8 glasses of water to keep the body balanced. Unfortunately, most of us eat closer to 3,400 mg of salt daily.

If you want more information about salt…how to reduce it in your diet…what are the hidden sources of it…how it affects children, then go to the following website at the American Heart Association:

PROGRAMS AND REMINDERS

Book Fair

Book Fair is here! Your students will have the opportunity to shop throughout the week during the day. You are also welcome to come up to the school to shop when your student is there or to shop by yourself.

Evening hours are available on Thursday, 3/22, and volunteer opportunities are still available!

Picture Day

Picture Day is tomorrow, 3/21!  Students will be taking both individual Spring pictures as well as their full class pictures with their teachers and classmates.

For the class picture, you will need to either pre-pay online and return the form with the code or send in money with the form.

Individual pictures will be paid for after the pictures have been reviewed; you will pay for what you keep.

Kinder Registration

Kindergarten Registration is quickly approaching! Please share with your friends and neighbors that they should first enroll online before coming to the school.

Don't forget that immunization records sometimes take a few days for your pediatrician to prepare and return, so do that quickly!

SERVICE AND SUPPORT

First time Amazon Smile members can now TRIPLE their impact when they register to support CHE PTA! Until March 31st, 1.5% of your first Amazon Smile purchase will go towards our organization.  Fill up your cart and register your account today!

The PTA Volunteer Program is one of the best ways that parents can support the students and staff at our school.  Our needs can be found on CHEPTA.NET under My Account --> Volunteer Opportunities.

Don't forget your background check! It's required for all volunteers that will be at the school. It takes about three weeks to complete and is active for three years (the year you apply plus the next 2 school years). Click here or below to complete the LISD form.

THE FUN STUFF a.k.a. "Why We're All Here"

Mrs. Taylor and I would like to nominate Mrs. Lea for Teacher of the Month for March. Mrs. Lea is truly an inspiration for all of her students and strives to ensure that her students know that they are capable of great things and have the opportunity to be successful at whatever they choose. She makes sure that her students feel safe and appreciated in her classroom. Her lesson creativity, makes her students engaged in the learning process and wanting to come to her class. Mrs. Lea is a team player, and supports RtI, 504, and ARD committee meetings regularly. She is able to balance student testing, meetings, and teaching as the professional she is. This year she has presented to the entire staff about dyslexia awareness and has gone into more depth on this topic of phonemic awareness with Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers. Every morning she can be found in the library taping the news crew who informs the school of the days upcoming events and weather. Mrs. Lea is a true asset to our students and staff.

Who is your hero and why? My heroes are all the Public School Teachers who dedicate their lives to helping children.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be? If I could live anywhere, I would live on a beautiful beach with my family!

What is your favorite family vacation? My favorite family vacation was to Round Hill Resort in Jamaica. My daughter was married at Round Hill!

What really makes you sad? What really makes me sad is to see people or animals be mistreated

What motivates you? What motivates me is knowing Spring Break is only a few days away!

What is your favorite thing about your career? The favorite thing about my career is helping students learn to read!

What is your proudest accomplishment? My proudest accomplishment is my family. I recently celebrated my 35th Wedding Anniversary to Kelly Lea. Together we have two amazing children, Kelci and Tyler. We love spending time together as a family.

What is your favorite book? I have too many favorite books to narrow it down to just one! I read every night and love mystery novels.

What makes you laugh the most? I love to laugh! My students are always making me laugh with their quick wit and unexpected comments! I enjoy watching comedies and eating popcorn too!

The Cooper Agency, a Farmers Insurance Agency, is awarding the Teacher of the Month with a $100 stipend to use for classroom supplies and favorite things.

Thank you to all of the CHE families that supported the Box Tops Program! Special congratulations to Mason Chandran, Ellie Tomancak, and Jewel Huppe for being the top 3 collectors for Winter 2017/18. Our next, and final, collection of the year will be May 15th!

My name is Shasa Shrestha and I am in 4th grade, my teacher is Mr. Henderson. The best thing about 4th grade is being able to do so many fun things like recorders and the best thing about Mr. Henderson is that he is so nice and funny.

At science night the fourth and fifth graders take their science experiment to CHE and present them. The student gets to choose the experiment with or without a partner and then take their experiment to science night. And everyone can come to the school and watch the fourth and fifth graders present the experiments and do lots of other things. One of the best things about science night is that there are many fun things to explore for everyone like the shrink-a-dinks where you draw on a plastic container and when you heat it up in a microwave it shrinks, the kid in a bag where they put you in a bag and vacuum the air out, the weather flower where you make a flower that changes color when touched by water, the density bottle where you put different liquids in a bottle and see the density and all the slime it's all so cool! Everything is also educational so as you have fun you also learn. I think that everyone should participate and not only because it is a learning event, but it is also where all ages can have so much fun!
