SUBJECT: Castle Courier Vol. 16, No. 19

Volume XVI, Issue 19 - May 15, 2018

What an amazing school year!  I hope you and your family were able to participate in each of the events and programs offered this year.  I want to give a final thank you to this year’s PTA Board for their service and especially to all the volunteers who worked so hard to plan events that brought our community together.  We are truly blessed with the best parents, teachers & staff, and students!  I hope your children have learned and experienced as much as my boys have this year.

As we enter into the last few weeks of school, the PTA still has many upcoming events starting with our last General Meeting on Thursday, May 17th at 6:30 pm.  Sometime that evening, we will have the following: Snapping Dragon & 5th grade Ukulele performances, Killian preview night, representatives from the Carrollton public library to discuss their summer reading program (& sign up for a library card), and PIZZA! In addition, please be sure to check our calendar for the date and time for Camp Wanna Read, our last Spirit Night, Field Day, Reading Counts parties, Dragon Award Ceremonies, and End of year parties.

We also have many special events planned for our 5th graders.  We are so proud of each of them and know they are ready to accomplish great things.  We wish them continued success with their future and hope they enjoy their last few weeks here at the Castle.

As I close my first year as President, I have one final request.  Below is a link to a survey.  This survey is connected to the School of Excellence designation given by the National PTA organization.  Our PTA will be sending our final submission by the end of May and your feedback is the primary driver.  The survey will only take a few minutes and is completely anonymous.  In addition, we are seeking feedback regarding our overall PTA programming and how your family benefits.  I would greatly appreciate your help in recognizing our PTA as one of the best in the nation.

National PTA School of Excellence and CHE PTA Program Survey

Thank you again to all our teachers, staff, Mr. Johnson & Mrs. Taylor for making this a fantastic school year.  And thank you for allowing me to serve as your President this year.

I hope you have a relaxing summer.  Please feel free to reach out with any questions or feedback.  See you next year!

Please take a few minutes to provide feedback on CHE PTA.

We still have a handful of open positions for the 2018-2020 term. If you would like to contribute to the PTA Events and Programs, please take a look at the opportunities available. Remember, if we do not fill the positions, we will not offer those program that year. https://castlehillspta.membershiptoolkit.com/pta_positions

The PTA Volunteer Program is one of the best ways that parents can support the students and staff at our school.  Our needs can be found on CHEPTA.NET under My Account --> Volunteer Opportunities.

Don't forget your background check! It's required for all volunteers that will be at the school. It takes about three weeks to complete and is active for three years (the year you apply plus the next 2 school years). Click here or below to complete the LISD form

THE FUN STUFF a.k.a. "Why We're All Here"

Mr. Johnson and I would like to nominate Mrs. Birch as the May CHE Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Birch has only been here at CHE for one year but has made a point of becoming a part of the community and school. She has gotten to know her students and her classroom has the feel of a family that works together to learn and grow. Mrs. Birch supports Great Expectations throughout her classroom and is very consistent with the implementation of the program. She also takes the time to support her students outside the school environment by going to their different activities.

Who is your hero and why?
Helen Keller, she never gave up, kept on trying, but realized it’s okay to ask for help. She was quoted, “ Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Oh I would love to live in Australia, the accents are just so fun to hear. And growing up one of my favorite books was Alexander Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day.

What is your favorite family vacation?
Beach time, we enjoy putting our feet in the sand and playing in the water.

What would you change about yourself if you could?
Wish I could be a little bit more organized, I have the best intentions but as time goes by I tend to slack a little bit (at home and a school too).

What really makes you sad?
I am so sad that I don’t have a green thumb at ALL. Seriously I can’t even keep a succulent alive. So this time of year we learn about plants, life cycles and do some planting. I always tell my students do as a say NOT as I do. Fingers crossed we’ll have some sprouts with our plants this year.

What motivates you?
The conversations that I have with my students as we learn. I ask for them to share their learning connections to self, to text, to world, and to media. They always amaze me with their knowledge, what they want to know and what they learned at the end of unit.

What is your favorite thing about your career?
I love that learning never stops. I am a life long learner and enjoy learning new things from my colleagues and my students.

What is your proudest accomplishment?
I am most proudest of earning my Master in Elementary Education while teaching my first year in Austin ISD as a 1st Grade Teacher. Looking back I’m not sure how I managed doing both at the same time. I am so glad I did the Texas State Teacher’s Fellows Program that guided and support me the whole way through.

What is your favorite book?
I enjoy reading anything by Mo Willems the author of Elephant and Piggie Series with my class. As for my own reading list I enjoy thiller/mystery currently Robert Dugoni.

What makes you laugh the most?
My own children, Adeline 3 years old and my son Harrison 2 years old in (June), it is never a dull moment with these too. At home we have dance parties (which their moves are something else), enjoy cooking together and playing dress up in princess and super hero costumes. Kids really do say the darnest things.

The Cooper Agency, a Farmers Insurance Agency, is awarding the Teacher of the Month with a $100 stipend to use for classroom supplies and favorite things.

My name is Reyna Daniels and I am in 4th grade. Ms. Buell is my homeroom teacher. I like a lot of things about Ms. Buell. She is kind, helpful, and has a good sense of humor. My favorite thing about 4th grade is that we got to go to Austin for a field trip to see the capital.

This year I was lucky to be a part of Snapping Dragons. The Snapping Dragons is the name of the CHE choir that practices for concerts and shows for the parents. To get into the Snapping Dragons choir, you have to fill out an application and audition. Mr. Isom will select students to be a part of his choir. My favorite thing about being in choir is that I get to work on my singing. I have a passion for singing. Also we get to miss a few days of school to go to concerts and competitions. All kids should try out for choir because its loads of fun and Mr. Isom is a really great teacher. He is so funny and makes the class fun!

My name is Eli Samuel. My homeroom teacher is Mrs.Howell. My favorite thing about her is that she always has fun assignments in class. I also have Mrs. Buell and Mrs. Pierce. They are both funny and fun. My favorite thing about the 4th grade is all the projects.

This year I was chosen to be in the Snapping Dragons (choir). In choir we sing in competitions, concerts, and at rehearsals. Rehearsal is every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Usually 6:45 to 7:30. People who can join are 4th and 5th graders who have tried out and made it. Snapping Dragons also have a chance to win a trophy in the competition.

My favorite thing about choir is that you can sing your soul out. In choir we have 2 field trips they are at the mall and Pinstack. Most people like the warm ups we do in rehearsal. I think others should join because it is fun to sing as loud and the best you can.
