SUBJECT: Castle Courier Vol. 16, No. 12

Volume XVI, Issue 12 - February 6, 2018

Hello,

The holidays are behind us. We have made it through the first two nine-week grading periods as well.  Your students are back in their routines seemingly unaffected by the crazy Texas weather. Although we had a cold January, it did not stop us from celebrating the end of the second 9-week grading period with a schoolwide Rise and Shine. We also enjoyed a wonderful PTA meeting hosted by kindergarten and 2nd grade. We celebrated student art and the many cultures that represent Castle Hills. Cultural Night is always enlightening.

A couple of weeks ago I addressed bad weather and cold temperatures as they affect dropping your student off at school.  The number of students arriving late has stayed constant and has not shown any improvement. See Figure A below.

Our school doors open and we begin welcoming students at 7:15am. The bell rings at 7:35am and our mini Rise and Shines start by 7:37am. Please practice the life principal of responsibility and have your students to school by 7:35 am. Student’s do not start their day off well when they are late. They are stressed about their tardiness and often it is no fault of their own. It shows as they come through the office. Having your students here at school allows them time to socialize with friends, transition smoothly to class, and not start the day playing catch up. Thank you to all those who practice the life principal of commitment by having students on time and prepared for school.

At the end of the first 9 weeks, I shared data on our Ready to Learn Program. We continue to review the program, make some changes, and improve. We looked at data and observed some items we were tracking were not necessary to track and these items were removed. We also noticed that at some grade levels too many items were being tracked. Therefore, some grade levels reduced the numbers of items being tracked.

Below are the items being monitored in the Ready to Learn Program. I have listed the items by grade level here.

Kindergarten    Library books
1st GradeDaily Folder emptied and returned the next day and
Tuesday Folder emptied and returned on Wednesday
2nd GradePlanner and Homework
3rd GradeEFF and Homework
4th GradeiPad charged over half and earbuds
5th GradeiPad charged at 80%, Planner with assignments filled in, Parent signature
PEAthletic shoes
MusiciPad and/or recorder (grade 4 only)
STEMSTEM notebook (grades 2-5)
ArtiPad (grade 4 only)

The number of items being dropped off in the office has drastically reduced. THANK YOU!

Figure B below shows our ready to learn numbers for the second nine weeks.

During our daily Mini Rise and Shine assemblies, Mr. Johnson and I will be reinforcing our expectations of being prepared along with our GE Great Expectations. Together with your help students at Castle Hills will be Ready to Learn and continue to succeed here at the Castle and beyond.

February is a busy month here at the Castle. Fifth grade has outdoor school, 3rd grade is going to Elm Fork, some 2nd graders will be swimming at the last 2 weeks of the February. Kingdom Tale Receptions will start. One of my favorite nights of the year is Science Night will be on the 22nd. College/Career Day is on the 8th. If you are interested in participating in College/Career Day please contact Mrs. Stewart or Ms. Hurst.

As always, thank you for all the support you give me and the teachers here at Castle Hills. We have GREAT success because of GREAT students, GREAT teachers, and GREAT parents.

I have started using our new Bullying Curriculum that was purchased by a grant through Castle Hills Foundation.

Classes in K-2 and 5th grade have been taught the first lesson.  It is on Recognizing Bullying behavior.  Please ask your children the difference between a “Conflict and Bullying”.  They should be able to tell you.  Hint:  It has to do with it being one sided or two sided.  We talked about a person having power over the other person.  They also saw videos showing an unbalance of power between individuals.

The third and fourth grade will complete lesson one this week.

The feedback from fifth grade is that they like the curriculum and feel it does a good job of explaining at their level.  The students were also happy to hear that all students in our district will be learning this same curriculum.  Therefore, when they reach middle school all will come with the same base.

It is easy to teach because it does a good job of lining out what to say and how to present.  Please thank the foundation for getting our school a set to have on campus.

THE FUN STUFF a.k.a. "Why We're All Here"

Interview with Ms. Huntsman - Kindergarten

Question: What is your favorite daily activity to do to reinforce Great Expectations with your students?

Answer: Every morning, we have a Morning Meeting in which we do calendar, count how many friends are here, and count how many days we have been in school. We also discuss any changes in schedule and set the tone for the day. The calendar and attendance portions are student-led, which allows students to practice listening to one another, the Calendar Leader gets to stand and deliver, and the children are given the opportunity to help each other out when needed (Expectation #5).

Question: Can you give an example of how your class or a particular student exceeded one of your 8 expectations?

Answer: My class has really started exemplifying Expectation #6 (Recognizing every effort and applauding it). We are working on a 100 Acts of Kindness Board in which students can earn an act of kindness for things like helping someone clean up a spilled pencil box, using kind words, sharing, helping someone feel better, etc. When we first began, I had to recognize all of the Acts of Kindness. Now, I have kids coming up to me throughout the day saying, “He should get an Act of Kindness because he helped me clean up my pencil box,” or “She should get an Act of Kindness because she helped me up when I fell on the playground.”

Photos
The first picture is of one little girl in my class choosing to read her Guided Reading book to a friend during Buddy Reading Time. She chose to share her learning and even helped her friend sound out a word or two!

The second picture is of our 100 Acts of Kindness Chart. The two kids showcased had just gotten to write their initials on there.

CULTURAL NIGHT

This month we would like to nominate Ofelia Nations for all her hard work on making Cultural Night another success this year! She was able to keep it fresh by introducing crafts around the world and it warmed her heart when several kids approached her to tell her they enjoyed the hands on experience making different crafts! Ofelia mentioned that the process of coming up with the ideas, researching each country and coordinating logistics is hectic but is fun! This is a list of volunteers that took time out of their busy schedules to create displays and represent a country during the event. They are the ones that helped make this event happen and they are the ones that deserve all the credit, so and extra special thank you to them!

  • Carri Li (parent)
  • MeghnaMeghani (parent)
  • Patty and Bruce Larson (grandparents)
  • Bushra Azis (parent)
  • Aruna Koppanaur and daugther Brihati Krishnan
  • Reena Balero (parent)
  • Laura Torres (alumni parent)
  • Rachel Fite (parent)
  • Daniela Krasovsky (parent)

Special thanks to our middle school alumni that prepared displays for England and Japan and took charge of leading their tables:

  • Isabella Nations
  • Daniela Torres
  • Alysson Gerard
  • Alana Soileau
  • Ura Kang

We also had an overwhelming support from the Hebron NHS students. Last but not least, we need to send a big shout out to The Enchanted Artist, Z's Wok Restaurant and La Tapatia Meat market for their generous discounts and contributions!  Thank you to Ofelia and everyone who volunteered their time to make this night such a success!

REFLECTIONS

We would also like to nominate Jessica Melker for all her hard work on making Reflections a huge success this year!   Reflections has been a staple arts program in many schools for nearly 50 years. Through the efforts of our Local PTAs, millions of students have found a creative outlet in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. With positive recognition as the focus of this program, rather than competition, students of all ages and abilities can experience the benefits of creative expression and help in finding their own voice in telling their unique story. Started in 1969 by Mary Lou Anderson, then Colorado PTA President, Reflections has grown to be one of the largest nationwide programs of its kind, with more than 200,000 students participating annually.

Jessica was in charge of promoting and marking this national program, collecting entries and ensuring all requirements are met, coordinating judges, advancing entries to district PTA, printing student certificates and ribbons, displaying all artwork and entries in mini art exhibit in school hallway, Reflections presentation at PTA meeting, working with Council rep regarding rules and procedures and student advancement!

This year we had:

  • 89 entries (more than 25 more than last year)
  • 22 advanced to Council PTA
  • 3 advanced to State PTA

A big thank you to these volunteers who helped with judging and the art display: Mrs. Stroud, Mandy Bain, Adrianne Miller, Kelly Little, Way-Way Pee, Sarah Durrant, Nina Samuel, Erica Wilson, Chinyere Etufugh

Thank you to everyone who made this event a HUGE success!

Thank you to all of our participants
for your creative and beautiful Reflections entries!

Thank you to all of the families that participated in the Breanna's Buddies Lemm Elementary Art Donation Drive.  We were able to ship off two large boxes of supplies not to mention everything that was sent directly to the school via Amazon.  Thank you to Breanna's Buddies for coordinating the drive.  Look at those happy faces of the students that are ready to start creating!

Hi! My name is Vrishangan Krishna. I am in Kinder Garten. My favorite thing about Kinder Garten is that I go to school with my sister who is in Fifth grade.  My Homeroom Teacher is Mrs. Birch. My favorite thing about my teacher is that she teaches me lot of things. She plans fun Family field trips, we made soup and bread in the class to learn science, she teaches fun things.

Cultural Night at CHE is fun because there are many stations from different countries. I get to learn about many cultures from different countries. I saw flags of different countries like India, Mexico, United States, Nigeria. 2nd grade kids also gave a performance. There is art displayed on the wall from Reflections. My sister performed Indian Classical dance.

My favorite thing was looking at everyone’s art, and watch my sister’s dance.

I think other students should also attend because it is lot of fun and they can learn about different cultures and countries.

International night is important so that you can learn new stuff about people. Another reason why it is important is so that you can learn what they do in different places. One reason why my friends are cool is because sometimes at recess we let everybody have a turn to tell us a game that they played wherever they are from. We also get to play all sorts of fun games, that is why I love recess. Also, my Grandparents are from Italy and this is so cool because I can learn how to speak Italian.

The Castle Hills Elementary Foundation is seeking three people to join the Advisory Board. This year we are looking for someone to serve for one year and two others to fulfill the usual three-year length of service. The Board consists of five members. The time commitment involved is estimated at one monthly meeting
(1-3 hours), as well as 5-8 additional hours a month.

In order to be considered you must meet the following qualifications:

  1. Must be an adult homeowner that is a current Castle Hills resident
  2. Must have a child/children attending Castle Hills Elementary school for the duration of the term to be served on the board
  3. May not be serving on any other Castle Hills Schools Foundation Boards
  4. May not be an officer of the Castle Hills Elementary PTA (President, Vice-President, Secretary or Treasurer, School Support Chair or PTA Grant Committee Member)
  5. May not be a full-time employee of Castle Hills Elementary
