SUBJECT: Castle Courier Vol. 16, No. 4

Volume XVI, Issue 4 - September 26, 2017

Our 1st graders had a fantastic performance showcasing their Great Expectation (GE) knowledge at our first PTA General meeting last week. I am always amazed how enthusiastic and engaged our children are with the lessons from GE. A special thank you to our 1st grade teachers – Ms. Fellner, Mrs. Mariani, Mrs. Rainwater, Ms. Taylor, and Mrs. Weaver - for their time in preparing the students for the performance.

One of the aspects of GE that I enjoy is the Word & Quote of the Week. A couple weeks ago, the word was Charity. Coincidentally, this fell on the week that we introduced the Hurricane Harvey fundraiser for Adams Elementary. We are so grateful for your generosity shown to the Adams Elementary students/teachers. And what a great real-world teaching opportunity for our children. Thank you for rallying so quickly and for your contributions.

In addition, I want to thank each of you who have contributed to our One and Done fundraiser. We are in our last week of collections. Your contribution is how our PTA survives and thrives! I thought it would be beneficial if we showed you “where the money goes.” (Please see below.) As noted, our focus is on enriching our children’s education and building connections within our community. If you are able to contribute, please go to CHEPTA.net to donate online or you can submit a check (payable to CHEPTA) to your child’s teacher.

The PTA has a fantastic year planned. Please make sure to check our calendar on CHEPTA.net for upcoming events. If you have any questions, please contact me at cnina76@hotmail.com.

Truly,

Nina Samuel
CHEPTA President (2017-19)

1) High Expectations for our Students
2) Teacher Attitude and Responsibility
3) All Children Can Learn
4) Building Self-Esteem
5) Creating a Climate of Mutual Respect
6) Teacher Knowledge and Skill

And CONGRATULATIONS to all of our teachers and staff for helping Castle Hills become a Great Expectations MODEL SCHOOL! To be named a Model School, 90% of the staff must be implementing the GE practices in their classrooms 100% of the time each and everyday. Awesome job!

Rebuilding Staff Sgt. Lucian Adams Elementary School

We honestly had our doubts. We admit. This opportunity to “Adopt” an Elementary School who had been devastated by Hurricane Harvey and lost everything was not something we really wanted to take on. This Title One elementary school who relied on support even in the good times, we didn’t want to disappoint. It was too much responsibility. We came across the opportunity late in the devastation. People had already given. They had already donated their money, goods and time. We were nervous to take this on and not be able to deliver.

But just in case you didn’t already know…….Castle Hills Elementary rocks at generosity. Everyone from our administration, to our teachers and staff, to our students, parents and PTA. We rock.

We took on the wish lists of these teachers in Kinder, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, Music and PE at Adams Elementary in Port Arthur Texas and bought over 300 items surpassing $5,000!!

Your generosity is inspiring and contagious! We were able to partner with the Non-Profit, Kids Prosper Kids, who initiated the relationship with Adams Elementary. Kids Prosper Kids (here in Prosper Tx) is an amazing organization who’s mission it is "to see where the world needs help, then do all we can to generate change and prosperity”. If you have a moment to check them out, they are awesome. A big thanks to them for their organization and hard work in making this happen.

As of now, the classes at Adams Elementary are being relocated to other schools in their district. They are hoping to be back in their own school by Thanksgiving. With your help and others, they can make this happen. Thank you for saying yes to help.

Reflections - Learn more about the Reflections Program here

My name is Matthew Holloway. I am in fourth grade at Castle Hills Elementary and I love this grade because I have the best teachers ever. My homeroom teacher is Mrs. Howell although I also have Mrs. Buell and Mrs. Pierce. My favorite thing about Mrs. Howell is that she is really kind, funny, and tells really good stories.

Reflections is a program where the PTA gives you a theme and you use the theme to make photography, art, dance routine, film, poem or short story. I really love the Reflections program because you put your creativity to use. Reflections really is the best because I also like walking down the halls of our school looking at everyone's artwork. It really impresses me on how creative kindergarteners through fifth graders really can be. Reflections lights me up and makes me happy when I advance to the next level and it will to other students as well. I really enjoy crafting as well as drawing, cutting, gluing, and especially looking at my finished product. Reflections takes hard work and a lot of patience. I hope that other people feel the same way as me. Students should take part in this because it really is a good competition as well as really fun. Always remember that in Reflections there are no limits!

Caleb Etufugh (1st grade ~ Taylor):
I like Reflections because kids get to make up stories that are cool. You use the idea they give you to create your own story and not copy what someone else thinks. When the kids use their imaginations to be creative and have fun. I like reflections because I can make whatever I want. It is not hard and it didn't take long. I just did it by myself.

Sydney Etufugh (5th Grade ~ Etherly):
I love reflections because it teaches you how to take a topic and use your imagination and talents to put it on paper like a drawing. At first I didnt know who to put on paper what I wanted to say. I just started drawing but by the end, I had a full drawing. For example, for last year's reflections, I used gymnastics in my drawing and in the video portion. I made me use my imagination to come up with what I wanted to show. You can chose what you want to do like a video, a photo, a drawing and stuff like that. I think it is good for people for people who like imagining things.

Thank you to Bricks 4 Kidz who will be providing a fun, educational activity for children ages 5-12 at no cost to the parents during the Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 27 at 5:30pm-7:30pm!
