Volume XVI, Issue 13 - February 20, 2018

Thank you for all those that came to the January General Meeting.  We enjoyed the 2nd grade performance.  We applauded our Reflections participants.  And we immersed ourselves into Cultural night by learning and creating different crafts of each country represented.  A special thanks to Ofelia Nations and her team for organizing Cultural night and to Jessica Melker for leading our Reflections program.  These are 2 great PTA programs that celebrate our diversity and encourage our student’s creativity.

The month of February is filled with many PTA sponsored events.  The PTA provided a Valentine’s Day cookie for each student, and each class celebrated the day by exchanging cards within the classroom.  We sponsored a bowling team consisted of CHE teachers to support LISD PTA’s Bowling for Scholars.  Proceeds benefit scholarships awarded every year to two high school seniors within LISD.   And we had a very informative book study discussion with Amy Blankson on strategies of utilizing technology offered in her book The Future of Happiness

We still have so much more to look forward to…Family Science Night is this Thursday, February 22nd from 6 pm to 8 pm.  Please bring the whole family to enjoy an evening of STEM related experiments and fun!  We want to wish the best of luck to all our Destination Imagination teams during the Regional Tournament on Saturday, February 24th. Each of our student-led teams have been working on their performance for over 6 months.  Thank you for your determination and creativity. Finally, we will be recognizing all our Kingdom Tales authors during grade level receptions starting on February 27th Please visit chepta.net for the specific date and time for each grade level.

I also wanted to remind you that our next Spirit Night will be on March 7th.  We have partnered with Design & Mine who is offering two sessions to create a 12x12 wood sign. Register early as space is limited!  Many thanks to Design & Mine for donating 20% of all sales back to CHE PTA.

Want to get more involved with our PTA?  One great way is to volunteer to serve on the PTA Board or Committee.  The list of open positions for 2018-2020 term is posted on CHEPTA.net.  Please contact Erica Willson (eleigh53@me.com) for more information.

Looking forward to connecting with you this month.  Please contact me with any questions.

Nina Samuel
CHE PTA President

February is the month we focus on love expressions for those who mean the world to us. It usually culminates on Valentine’s Day when we send flowers, balloons, cards, gifts and chocolate. In the past I’ve mentioned taking care of ourselves with healthy eating and exercise as a great way to show our love for family and friends. Another action we can take to demonstrate our concern for them is to learn the mechanics of CPR.
Being prepared in case of an emergency is a great way to have peace of mind should the unthinkable happen. I know many folks are unable to attend a CPR class, so I’ve listed several internet sites below where you can go to learn the dynamics of hands-only CPR. I encourage you to take five to ten minutes to observe the steps. If you have any questions about CPR, I will be glad to help you out.

Let’s head into the spring with our hearts, bodies and minds in shape for the warmer months."

Year-Round:

THE FUN STUFF a.k.a. "Why We're All Here"

Mrs. Taylor and Mr. Johnson would like to nominate Ms. Traci Pierce as Castle Hills February Teacher of the Month. Ms. Pierce has been very instrumental in working to integrate data from common formative assessments in 4th grade. She works very closely with Mrs. Magana using the data from these assessments to better serve the needs of students. Ms. Pierce is always positive, friendly, and ready to give a helping hand to support students and the school as a whole. She steps up and fills needs. Her students are receptive to her instructional methods and enjoy her class. Thanks, Ms. Pierce!.

Who is your hero and why?  My Mother, She was so strong, supportive and a great example for me growing up.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?  Orlando Florida, 2 of my favorite places to hang out are Disney World and Universal Studios

What is your favorite family vacation?  I visited Glacier National Park and hiked to glacier lake and many other areas. It was the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen.

What would you change about yourself if you could?  I sometimes wish I was not so tall with long feet.  I have been known to almost trip over my own feet.

What really makes you sad?  I feel sad when I miss my mother that I lost to Cancer at the age of 27. I wish she could have met her grandkids.

What motivates you? I am motivated by helping others and watching them succeed at their goals.

What is your favorite thing about your career?  I love working with students each day and teaching math. I love working with numbers and learning new strategies that help my students.

What is your proudest accomplishment?  My kids are one of my proudest accomplishments. I have a 21 year old son and a 16 year old daughter and I am so proud of them and the people they have become.

What is your favorite book?  I loved reading The Energy Bus and The Shark and the Goldfish by Jon Gordon.

What makes you laugh the most?  Improvisational comedy makes me laugh.

The Cooper Agency, a Farmers Insurance Agency, is awarding the Teacher of the Month with a $100 stipend to use for classroom supplies and favorite things.

My name is Claire Pee and I’m in fourth grade. My favorite part of being in this grade is because of my 3 teachers: Mrs. Magaña, Mrs. Hardison, and Mr. Henderson, but my Homeroom teacher is Mrs. Hardison. She is funny and nice (If you don’t bug her 😉) and she has great teaching techniques. I’m writing about the Spelling Bee and the Geography Bee. These are to see from fourth and fifth grade who is the best at geography or spelling. For the Spelling Bee, two people from each class can go to the Bee, but for the Geography Bee it is three people from each class. Everyone blindly chooses a number, and the following day, that is the order the contestants answer the questions when everyone takes turns answering questions. My favorite thing about these events are that anyone can win, and anyone that participates worked for it and should be happy to even be there. Other students should TRY to participate in these Bees because they challenge your mind and make you smarter. They challenge you to work harder (and smarter!) with everyday things.

My Name is Anay Nandalike, and I am in fifth grade. My favorite thing about this grade is that you are senior most and everybody respects you. King of the mountain, know what I mean. My homeroom teacher is Mrs. Etherly. My favorite thing about her is her sense of humor. The name of the event I participated in was the Spelling Bee. This event is made to encourage spelling awareness and learn more about your language. Basically, what you do is there are rounds, and each time you will be given a word ( you can ask the definition, language of origin, etc.) and you have to spell the word correctly, if you spell it correctly, you advance to the next round, if you misspell it, you will have to wait till the end of the round to be out. Anyone can participate, as long as they want to, because anybody can go to Nationals. My favorite thing about it is that the rush you feel when you are about to go in front of the microphone, it’s almost like caffeine. Students should participate because it’s something everyone can do. Everyone can spell. You don’t have to be athletic, you don’t have to be a Harvard grad, you don’t have to be an artist. You just have to be you.
